Welcome to our Class!

Better Late Than Never!

Here we are 42 days into the school year with one grading period complete.  I wish I had been able to post sooner, but the beginning of the year is quite chaotic.  As they say, better late than never!

Our class has settled into a wonderful routine, and I am so proud of how hard they work.  You may hear your student talk about Read to Self or Read to Someone.  These are two parts of our literacy framework called The Daily 5.  We do these "centers" each day during our Daily 5 time, along with Word Work and Listen to Reading.  We haven't begun Work on Writing, which is the fifth piece of the Daily 5 puzzle, but we will add that in a week or two.

Read to Self

Word Work

Our goal is that students will be independent in these centers so that I can work with small groups on literacy skills each day.  This will allow all students to receive more individual attention at their readiness level.  This is the first year I have used Daily 5, and in the last two weeks it has really fallen into place.  I'm so excited to see what is going to happen every day, and what's even more exciting is to see how much the kids love it!!  I have never had a class that just loves to read as much as this one.  I attribute that to the Daily 5 because it emphasizes reading independently from day 1.

Many of our Word Work choices include activities using the students' names.  These are very popular!  I will post pictures just as soon as I can.

I will leave you with some pictures of a few things hanging in our hallway.  Here you will see two of our favorite characters--No, David! and Pete the Cat.
